Abstract

The purpose of this research was to identify why an inclusive work environment is needed, and what it takes to build an inclusive workplace environment for transgender and gender non-conforming employees. Additional research done in this study shows that a lack of an inclusive policy can be problematic as it not only can lead to inequitable treatment for transgender and gender-non-conforming employees, but also that merely having a policy is not enough (Mizock, 2018). The research also supports the need for policies to be informative, promote greater awareness, be reviewed periodically, and, most important, enforced. Based on the outcome of this research, an HR toolkit is being proposed and recommended to assist organizations with the building of and support for an inclusive work environment that is sustainable.
