Allied Propaganda and World War I: Interwar Legacies, Media Studies, and the Politics of War Guilt

Abstract

This article investigates the consensus, forged in the interwar period, that German atrocities during World War I were a fabrication of Allied propaganda. In light of recent scholarship that suggests such atrocities actually did occur, Gullace examines the emotional and moral stake 20th century scholars have in the image of World War I as an unnecessary conflict, fueled by government mendacity.
