c. 1900. Man’s vest of yellow cotton corduroy.
The vest is made with four pieces: two front panels of yellow cotton corduroy and two back panels of white cotton. At the hem the front is cut straight across at the waist, and in back the panels curve up toward the center to a 4.4 cm / 1.75 in. high peak at the seam. The vest is single-breasted with front openings measuring 15.9 cm / 6.25 in. high. There are three flat buttons covered with the yellow corduroy at the opening. The vest has a deep U shape in front measuring 48.3 cm / 19 in. from the shoulder seam to the top of the front opening, finished with a shawl collar 5.1 cm / 2 in. at widest that has been sewn down. There are two pockets on the left side and one on the right, and one interior pocket on the right. The vest can be adjusted with a belt sewn in at the side seams in back. The front is lined with a cream cotton twill, with padding between the velvet and the lining at the chest. “Sawyer 48 sm” is written in ink on the lining of the left front panel. Machine-sewn and hand-sewn.
