1845-1865. White cotton mull engageantes (undersleeves) with Vandyke edging (deep decorative V-shaped points) on the cuffs. The body of the engageante is a rectangle of plain-woven sheer fabric hemmed at the top edge, without being gathered, and sewn into a tube. The bottom edge has a separate, white-on white embroidered Vandyke trim (9.5 cm / 3.75 in. peaks and 5.1 cm / 2 in. valleys), and both are tightly gathered as one unit to the flat cuff. The points of the Vandyke trim are tacked back onto the sleeve on one engageante, and the tacking stitches have been cut or given away on the other. The cuff is finished on the short ends with a narrow double-folded hem and on the long sides with a rolled hem secured with a blanket stitch; it is also embroidered. Hand-sewn.
