Description
A music manuscript folio with the notation for the songs "King George the Third's Minuet", "Orange Boven, or William, Prince of Orange and Nassau", and "A [Garat]" on the front. "Orange Boven" is a mispelling of "Oranje boven", the Dutch name for the song. The inner pages contain notation for "A Military Minuet", "A Bassoon Minuet", "Worcester Races", "The Irish Lottery"—which includes detailed dance instructions—"Tarantilla-the Wonder-working Tune", and "Tell Me Lovely Shepard Where", which comes from the secular cantata "Solomon" by William Boyce. "Tarantilla-the Wonder-working tune" is identified as coming from a letter from Stephan Storace, and was also used by Storace as the melody to his "Torre Annunziata: The Tarantula Tune". The inner recto page also as the Latin writing on "Le XI. Novembre--Saint Martin, évêque et confesseur"—St. Martin's Day, November 11th—as well as what appears to be the beginning of a plainchant melody. The back page has notation and lyrics for the songs "Lullaby--The Nightingale", "British Grenadiers" and "Plato's Advice". Sources are listed on the manuscript. Part of the collection of songs and dances from the 17th and 18th centuries gathered by Bessie Osgood; "King George the Third's Minuet" is in E-flat major and 3/4 time; "Orange Boven, or William, Prince of Orange and Nassau" is in B-flat major and 2/2 time; "A [Garat]" is in E-flat major and 4/4 time; "A Military Minuet" is in E-flat major and 3/4 time; "The Bassoon Minuet" is in F major and 3/4 time; "Worcester Races" is in B-flat major and 2/4 time; "The Irish Lullaby" is in D major and 2/2 time; "Tarantilla-The Wonder-working tune" is in C major and 12/8 time; "Tell me Lovely Shepard Where" is in E-flat major and 6/8 time; "Lullaby-The Nightingale" is in C major and 6/8 time; "British Grenadiers" is in D major and 2/4 time; "Plato's Advice" is in G major and 4/4 time.
