Description

1780-1790. Shoes with latchets. The red kidskin vamp (toe) is moderately long, coming to a rounded point and a sharply pointed tongue. The quarters (backs) are also red kidskin and are sewn together in back and overlap the ends of the vamp at the sides of the shoe, where they are sewn in place. White kidskin latchets are sewn to the quarters at this seam. These overlap on top of the tongue to close the shoe and would have been held together with a removable buckle when worn. The red kidskin is bound with white silk, and the white kidskin is bound with red silk. The continuous leather sole incorporates a low white kidskin Italian heel, and is undifferentiated. Lined with linen. Professionally made. Hand-sewn.
