Abstract

"State goals and roles" is a podcast with Paul Lingenfelter, President of the State Higher Education Executive Officers (SHEEO). Lingenfelter asserts the importance of postsecondary education for all Americans in order to participate in the middle-class. Given this assertion, Lingenfelter discusses the importance of the state and federal governments working together as an educational community to meet the needs of the economy. To this end, Ligenfelter contends educational attainment needs to be a top priority for state governments. Additionally, both state and federal governments should employ financial aid policies which motivate students toward attainment goals. In regards to accreditation, postsecondary education needs to do a better job of what articulating what a degree means, in regards to content in a process that is largely faculty driven. Lastly, Lingenfelter advocates for a national student record system that is student based, using state models as an example.
