Language of Instruction: Using Language to Empower Urban Elementary Students

Megan Katz, University of New Hampshire

Abstract

In this paper, I examined how elementary school teachers can use their oral language to empower urban elementary school students as learners. In addition to field work in an urban elementary school outside of Boston, MA, I have researched ways that teachers can help students develop the learning trait of perseverance in their students. Teachers help "teach" perseverance by using language to help students develop positive identities, power, agency, and communities.
