Comparing Milk Composition and the Stress Marker Cortisol in Pasture vs. Total Mixed Ration-Fed Dairy Cattle

Katherine Frazier, University of New Hampshire

Abstract

The health of organic dairy cattle and conventionally managed dairy cattle was compared by investigating milk components and milk cortisol levels in the two groups. Energy corrected milk yield, milk protein, milk fat, milk urea nitrogens, and total solids were significantly higher at the Fairchild conventional dairy farm at most time points. More time points need to be investigated to determine the significance of milk cortisol levels between the two farms.
